Access To Work Programme

The Access to Work programme is a UK government initiative designed to provide practical and financial support to individuals with disabilities or health conditions, helping them overcome barriers to employment. Whether you’re starting a new job, already employed, or self-employed, Access to Work offers tailored support, including funding for workplace adjustments, specialised equipment, and travel assistance, to ensure that everyone has equal opportunities to thrive in the workplace. This programme plays a vital role in empowering individuals to pursue their careers confidently and independently.

Financial Support for Adjustments:

The programme provides financial assistance to cover the costs of necessary workplace adjustments, such as specialist equipment, support workers, or travel assistance. This reduces the financial burden on employers, especially small businesses.

Improved Employee Productivity:

By ensuring that employees with disabilities or health conditions have the necessary tools and support, their productivity and efficiency can significantly improve. This leads to better overall performance and contributes positively to the company’s goals.

Employee Retention:

Employees who feel supported and valued are more likely to stay with the company. This reduces turnover rates and the associated costs of recruiting and training new staff.

Expert Advice and Guidance:

Employers can access expert advice and resources through the Access to Work programme. This includes help with making adjustments, understanding legal responsibilities, and implementing best practices for supporting employees with disabilities.

Financial Support for Necessary Adjustments:

The programme covers the cost of specialist equipment, adaptations, or support workers. This ensures employees have the tools and support they need to perform their job effectively. Assistance with travel costs and arrangements helps employees manage their commute better is also available.

Equal Opportunities:

The programme ensures that employees with disabilities or health conditions have the same opportunities as their colleagues. This fosters a sense of equality and inclusion in the workplace.

Mental Health Support:

The programme offers mental health support, helping employees manage work-related stress and anxiety. This can lead to improved mental well-being and a more positive work experience.

Documentation and Follow-Up:

Ensure that any agreed-upon accommodations are documented and confirmed. This will help both you and the employer to be clear about expectations and support.

How Access To Work Programme Impacts Employers?

It is highly recommended that when applying for the programme you apply within the first week of the 6 weeks of your job as this ensures that the employer does not have to contribute money towards, however if you’ve been in your job for more than six weeks when you first apply for support, the employer’s contribution will depend on their size:

For employers with fewer than 50 staff, Access to Work can pay 80% of the approved costs.

For employers with 50 to 249 staff, the employer must pay the first £500, and then Access to Work covers 80% of the costs up to £10,000.

For large employers with 250 or more staff, the employer covers the first £1,000, and Access to Work covers 80% up to £10,000.

The Process For Application

Start by contacting the Access to Work team via phone or email. During this first conversation, you’ll learn if you’re eligible and what types of support are available. Friendly advisers will answer your questions and guide you on the next steps. (THIS DOES NOT REQUIRE A DIAGNOSIS).

After your initial enquiry, you’ll have a detailed chat with an Access to Work adviser. They’ll ask about your job, your daily tasks, and any challenges you face because of your disability or health condition. This helps them understand what kind of support you need.

Using the information from your needs assessment, you’ll fill out the Access to Work application form. This form includes details about your disability, your job, and the specific support you need. You might also need to provide medical evidence. The Access to Work team will assist you with the application to make sure everything is clear and complete.

Once you submit your application, the Access to Work team will review it. They’ll look at the information and any supporting documents you provided. You’ll be notified of their decision as soon as possible, so you know what support you’ll receive.
