MYTH 1:

GDD Automatically Equals Intellectual Disability.

REALITY:

The severity and extent of cognitive impairment can vary among individuals. Some adults with GDD may have average or above-average intelligence in certain areas, while still experiencing delays in other areas of development.

MYTH 2:

GDD Only Affects Children.

REALITY:

GDD is primarily diagnosed in childhood, some individuals may continue to experience developmental delays or challenges into adulthood. These individuals may require ongoing support and accommodations to address their needs.

MYTH 3:

GDD is Always Evident from Birth.

REALITY:

Some cases of GDD may be identified in infancy or early childhood, others may not become apparent until later developmental stages. Children may initially appear to be developing typically but then exhibit delays or regressions in various areas of development.

MYTH 4:

GDD Is Always a Barrier to Employment.

REALITY:

While individuals with GDD may face barriers to employment, such as prejudice or lack of accommodations, many are capable of securing and maintaining meaningful employment with the right support.

MYTH 5:

GDD is Always Easy to Identify.

REALITY:

Identifying GDD can be challenging, especially in young children, as developmental milestones can vary widely among individuals. Some children with GDD may present with subtle or atypical symptoms that are not immediately recognised as developmental delays.

MYTH 6:

GDD Defines a Child’s Potential.

REALITY:

While GDD may present challenges in certain areas of development, it does not define a child’s potential or future capabilities. With appropriate support, and opportunities, children with GDD can achieve success lives, reaching their full potential.
